1995 Château Haut-Bages Libéral, Pauillac (5th Growth)

A small Pauillac estate with outsized terroir. Haut-Bages Libéral's vineyards sit on a gravel plateau neighboring Château Latour and Pichon Baron, giving the wine access to some of the most coveted soil in Bordeaux. Classified as a 5th Growth in 1855, the estate is now certified organic and biodynamic under Claire Villars-Lurton.

1995 was a benchmark Bordeaux vintage, and this bottle shows the classic Pauillac profile at full maturity. Medium ruby with a touch of bricking at the rim. Aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, earth, and leather. Medium-bodied, dry, with velvety tannins and flavors of cherry, plum, and tobacco leading to a long finish.

An excellent entry point into aged classed-growth Bordeaux, and a meaningful 1995 birth year gift at a fraction of the price of its more famous neighbors.
