Beaune 1er Cru “à l’Ecu” 2018, Domaine Besancenot

One of the smallest Premier Cru sites in all of Beaune, shared among just three owners. "À l'Ecu" sits at the highest point of the slope north of Beaune, where limestone-rich soils and ideal exposure produce a wine with more depth and tension than most village Beaune ever gets close to.

The name dates to the Middle Ages, when this was the enclosure where winegrowers paid their taxes to the Dukes of Burgundy. The vineyard has been making serious wine for centuries. Domaine Besancenot is one of three families who tend it today.

Hand-harvested, vinified in open vats with gentle cap-punching and long maceration, then aged 20 to 24 months in oak barrels (2 to 5 years old) to keep the terroir in front of the wood. This is a 2018 with seven years of age on it already, drinking in a beautiful spot right now with plenty of runway left.

Bright red and black cherry, wild strawberry, spice, and subtle forest floor on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, round texture, and a mineral lift that carries the finish. Elegant but not shy.

Roasted meats, duck, charcuterie, or a creamy cheese like Brillat-Savarin.
