100% Merlot from one of the best Italian wine regions - Collio, Friuli    Planting year • 1967 - 2000 The grapes are collected on the basis of sensory analysis in the pre-harvest period: maximum maturation of skins and tannins is sought. This wine ferments at a controlled temperature of 26 °C. It remains on its skins for a period of 20 days during which the color and structure of the wine is extracted. It is refined in small oaken barrels with 500 l capacity where the malolactic fermentation takes place for a period of 14-16 months. At the end of this process, it is bottled without filtering to preserve its maximum integrity. It is then refined in the bottle for at least 4 months. Collio DOC area is located in the extreme North of Italy, among Slovenia, Austria and the Julian Alps. This charming borderland features ample surfaces facing south, which are perfect for highly qualified viticulture. Here, vine growing dates back to pre-Roman times, and DOC was established in 1968. The grapes for this wine are harvested exclusively by hand starting in mid September. After careful selection, the grapes are placed in small wooden crates and set aside to rest and dry. Around the end of January, the grapes are slightly pressed, and begin to ferment slowly. Located north of Beaune at the highest point of the slope, the 1er Cru “À l’Ecu” benefits from limestone-rich soils and exceptional exposure. It is one of the smallest Premier Cru sites in Beaune, shared among just three owners. The name “à l’Ecu” dates to the Middle Ages, referring to the enclosure where winegrowers once paid their taxes to the Dukes of Burgundy. Hand-harvested fruit is vinified in open vats following traditional Burgundian methods, with gentle cap-punching and long maceration to extract depth and perfume. The wine is then aged in oak barrels (2 to 5 years old) for up to 24 months, emphasizing the purity of the terroir over oak influence. Elegant power has enabled Kalkofen to rise phoenix-like from its ashes and cast a stylish spell over the world. The wine’s versatility and grace will tempt you to drop the pearl of your soul into a glass of this nectar. VINIFICATION : the small Vernatsch grapes come from the oldest vines in the vineyard, and were selected by hand for this wine. The fermentation began spontaneously in the wooden fermentation vat, with a ten-day maceration period. Following an eight month maturation period in barrique and big wood barrels, the wine was bottled in late-April. TASTING NOTES: this wine is a pure pleasure. Luminous ruby red, fruity aromas of forest berries and cherries, velvet tannins with a unique structure and minerality make this wine unique.  Winery: Our 2002 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a remarkably concentrated black and opaque hue. This is still an impressive wine, with aromas of spiced meats, raspberry compote, and a touch of hay. It has a massive attack and strong flavors of loose tobacco and cassis. It crescendos and builds momentum through the palate towards a long finish still framed by slightly chalky tannins. Given proper cellaring, this wine can be enjoyed now or will improve through 2030.
