The Cabernet Sauvignons that de Latour crafted from these grapes gave the world its first taste of California’s promise as a world-class winemaking region. In 1938 de Latour hired the young Russo-French enologist Andre Tchelistcheff, who would become California’s most distinguished winemaker. 2002 Antinori Villa Antinori Super Tuscan IGT
Vintage 2002 Antinori Villa Antinori Super Tuscan IGT $69.90
Villa Antinori is a mid-weight red blend of mostly Sangiovese, with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from vineyards across a number of appellations within Tuscany. A delicious bottle of wine. Beautiful ruby in the glass, no bricking. Very fruit forward, delicious notes of black cherries with a hint of citrus, and velvety smooth. Tastes like it could cost twice as much and you would still be impressed. Smoky, pruny, gamey, sweaty saddle leather, black cherry, tobacco nose. Rich, dry, slightly chunky and tight palate. Peppery, smoky, prune, chocolate, resin, mineral, vanilla flavours with a distinctly meaty, cassis note on the finish. A bit chunky but very good effort for the vintage.
Chateau Pichon Longueville, Pauillac 1988 Grand Cru classe
Pauillac, Bordeaux Chateau Pichon Longueville, Pauillac 1988 G... $469.00
"One of Pauillac's most consistently brilliant wines”. Very successful for the vintage, Pichon-Lalande’s 1988 has a dark garnet color and an intriguing nose of compost, earth, black currants, licorice, and weedy tobacco. The wine is medium-bodied with a sweet, relatively expansive mid-palate and slightly rugged tannins in the increasingly attenuated finish.         The Pichon-Lalande, the 1988 is hardly a weak link and the wine is outstanding in its very classical styling and proportions. The bouquet offers up a lovely, cool fruit blend of cassis, dark berries, menthol, tobacco leaf, gravel, cigar smoke and a judicious foundation of toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, pure and impeccably balanced, with a good solid core, melting tannins and fine focus and grip on the long, complex and very classy finish. This does not have the exotic topnotes of a sunnier vintage, but it has a lovely base of Pichon’s inimitable terroir and has no cause to apologize for anything! Fine, fine juice cut from an utterly classical cloth and a dramatically underrated vintage of Pichon-Lalande.
